Skipping conveniently over anything else from This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours, and definitely anything from Lifeblood and that weird period in-between, I’m keeping this blog populist and going for the big hits!
I can’t say that I thought Send Away The Tigers was the triumphant return to form that a lot of people heralded. To me it seemed to be pandering to two particular niches of Manics fan: the fairy-wing wearing teenage girls who never grew up (especially with the album’s artwork) or the Q magazine reading intelligent beer boys, who once or twice a year ‘don’t talk about love, just want to get drunk’ (just listen to Autumsong!).
But there were a few decent tracks on there, and lead CD single Your Love Alone Is Not Enough was the highlight for me. There’s just so much to like about it: its uptempo, euphoric strings; Nicky’s deadpan line towards the end; the fact that, like so much of the Manics’ later work, you have no idea what it’s actually about but it’s sung so heartfelt, by both James and Nina, that it doesn’t matter.
this just came on my itunes. SANG ALONG WITH EVERY WORD. LIKE A BOSS.
